Chapter 20

A rock came loose, toppling from above and almost causing Jorak to fall as he barely avoided it. He let out a breath of relief. The location of the meeting was near here. If this was a trap, there might not be much his snipers could do to defend him.

This canyon was enormous. There were a number of caves littering the area, making it easy to set up an ambush. All it would take was a quick peek from a cave, and nobody would see where the attack came from.

Jorak looked up the cliff he was climbing down. It had been a seventy-foot climb down or so. That was where the two snipers were located as they covered his descent. It was as good a spot as any to provide support if something went down. If it came down to a firefight, the snipers would be his best chance of escaping alive.

Accompanying him down were Simmons and Rhahone, both of whom retired from the military years ago. Simmons had easily cracked the code sent from their mystery contact. Rhahone had only served for seven years before leaving. He’d been part of the marines and had seen plenty of combat in his time.

“Radio check,” Jorak said. While all commlinks had been tested, he wanted to make sure they weren’t being jammed.

“Hear you loud and clear,” Korna said.

“We’re in position,” Eveline said.

Rhahone and Simmons both responded. So far, none of them saw their contacts, who should be arriving within the next ten minutes.

“How likely do you think this is a trap?” Rhahone asked.

“Not likely,” Simmons said. “That code was very old, even for Alliance standards. There is no way anyone would use that for a trap.”

A heavy gust of wind blew dust into the air, causing them all to cover their eyes. Other than the wind, though, it was extremely quiet. Jorak didn’t like it one bit. He trusted Simmons’s judgment yet couldn’t help but wonder if he had just thrown their lives away.

“We’ve got movement. Two o’clock. A dozen people headed your way,” Korna said over the commlink.

Jorak turned in that direction, seeing the same thing. He couldn’t tell who it was from this distance. “Can you verify an Alliance insignia anywhere?” he asked.

There was a brief pause as the snipers checked. It didn’t take long for them to verify. “There is an Alliance insignia. Most appear to be human, with their leader being a Yardakin.”

That was good news. Yardakins were very intelligent. They could memorize information after seeing it just once and were very good at strategy. Jorak’s bad feeling seemed to have just been paranoia.

“I’ll do most of the talking,” Jorak said as he started walking toward the group.

The Yardakin and his men finally got close enough to talk. Before Jorak could speak, someone from the group spoke first. “Where are the rest of your men?” the man asked.

“Easy, Vorch,” the Yardakin said. “They had to prepare for a potential trap. I know there are snipers somewhere watching us.
